So we all know Father’s Day is a great time to celebrate Dad. It’s right there in the name, right? But where did this holiday come from?
The idea of Father’s Day is originally attributed to Sonora Dodd, a Washington woman who decided to publically honor her father in the early 20th century. Her father, William, was a civil war veteran who raised six children on his own – No small feat! Sonora wanted a proper celebration to thank him for his efforts, so she held a celebration at the local YMCA on the third Sunday of June in 1910. This became a yearly event, and gained enough recognition over time that Father’s Day became signed into law as a national holiday in the ‘70s.
